Beaufort County Restaurant Inspections: Failures and Sanitation Concerns (2026)

The recent restaurant inspections conducted by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) in Beaufort County have revealed some concerning findings, particularly regarding food safety and hygiene practices. Among the three restaurants inspected, two received C grades, and one had its food permit suspended, highlighting the need for stricter adherence to food safety regulations.

La Nopalera Mexican Restaurant, located at 1220 Ribaut Road in Beaufort, initially received a C grade with 74 points during an inspection on August 5. This was due to critical issues such as employees failing to wash their hands before handling food and a significant fly presence in the kitchen. The situation improved during a follow-up inspection on August 14, where La Nopalera earned 94 points, but still received a C grade due to repeat violations. However, a subsequent inspection on August 21 resulted in an A grade with 100 points, indicating that the restaurant had addressed the initial concerns.

The Honeybaked Ham Company, situated at 1060 Fording Island Road in Bluffton, faced its own set of challenges. During a routine inspection on July 30, the restaurant received an A grade, but a follow-up inspection on August 6 resulted in a B grade with 96 points due to repeat violations. The issues included condenser leaks in the walk-in cooler and fridge, which could contaminate stored food, as well as a sink with dried grime and debris. The restaurant's efforts to rectify these problems were evident in the final follow-up inspection on August 13, where it received an A grade with 100 points, and no further action was required.

Perhaps the most concerning development was the suspension of Surf's Up Frosty Dog's food permit on August 28. The ice cream shop, located at 8 N. Forest Beach Drive in Coligny, had previously received C grades in May and an A grade in June. The suspension was due to compliance issues, and the restaurant must correct these violations and have them verified by SCDA inspectors before the suspension can be lifted. This incident underscores the importance of consistent adherence to food safety standards, especially in the food service industry.

These inspections highlight the critical role that food safety inspections play in ensuring the health and well-being of the public. Restaurants must prioritize hygiene and sanitation practices to prevent foodborne illnesses and maintain their reputation. While some restaurants demonstrated improvement, others faced the consequences of neglecting food safety regulations. It is essential for both restaurant owners and patrons to remain vigilant and proactive in maintaining high standards of food safety.
